Viktor E. Frankl

January 24, 2010

So, I recently finished the book “Man’s Search for Meaning” by Dr. Viktor Frankl and it really spoke to me.  In the first half of the book, Dr. Frankl reveals experiences had and observations made while held in 4 different concentration camps, including Auschwitz.  The second half of the book introduces the theory developed through his observations and explanations on logotherapy [Read more about Dr. Frankl and his works here].  His approach is matter of fact and simplified for the common reader-which I greatly appreciated.  The book is relatively a ’short read’ and something that I feel everyone should read.

A passage I’d like to share begins on page 130; it begins to discuss “The Meaning of Life”.  “…the meaning of life differs from man to man, from day to day and from hour to hour.  What matters, therefore, is not the meaning of life in general but rather the specific meaning of a person’s life at a given moment. “  And it continues “One should not search for an abstract meaning of life.  Everyone has his own specific vocation or mission in life to carry out a concrete assignment which demands fulfillment.”  And it concludes with the concept that “Ultimately, man should not ask what the meaning of life is, but rather he must recognize that it is he who is asked.  In a word, each man is questioned by life; and he can only answer to life by ansering for his own life; to life he can only respond by being responsible.”

As I read this I just thought “YES!”

There are so many additional passages I’d like to share, “The Essence of Existence”, “The Meaning of Love”, “The Meaning of Suffering” but I think you should get the book [click here] and read it all for yourself.

Happy Reading! [I'd love to hear your thoughts once you've read the book]

A few updates to share.

January 22, 2010

I have posted an update on the Photoshop course, just click on the “Online Courses” tab above for more information.

We’re now in our 12th week of pregnancy!  We’re officially in the 2 trimester and quite excited about all of the changes.  So far everything’s been very healthy and [knock on wood] easy!  No morning sickness!!!!  Mostly fatigue and that’s about it.

So, on top of all of the baby books…I’ve been reading some amazingly motivational books lately.  For example Viktor E. Frankl’s book “Man’s Search for Meaning” and “Success Built to Last: Creating a Life that Matters” by Porras, Emery and Thompson.  I HIGHLY recommend both of these books.  I will post a few of my fave excerpts from Dr. Frankl’s book when I have a bit more time.

And last but not least the first annual Savannah International Animation Festival is just around the corner!  I’m volunteering my talents by creating a program…that we hope to use.  Need to find a sponsor for it though.  Sadly it may have to go on the bench to be used for next year’s festival.  We’ll see if you’re interested in sponsoring, contact the directors on the website NOW!  Be sure to check out the website, they posted the line up and you can purchase tickets directly from the site. CLICK HERE FOR THE SAVANNAH INTERNATIONAL ANIMATION FESTIVAL WEBSITE. Perhaps I’ll see you there?  I’ll be attending and volunteering during the festival as well.  Always glad to help friends ^_^

Fun Commercials I Really Enjoy

November 3, 2009

This one really cracks me up…nearly every time I watch it.

Another one that never fails to make me giggle.  Sorry fellas.

I just thought this one is adorable.  Just saw it recently and having 5 dogs that constantly try to take each others bone in some tricky manner…it really speaks to me.

It’s not new, but I really love these series of  Prius commercials.  This is the first one I saw earlier this year.

Another older commercial but another great series.

A newer one I started noticing about a month or so ago.  Love the Gorillaz…and the first time hearing/seeing this one really surprised me.  I was very happy to see it so well done.

Speaks for itself.

This one melts my heart every time.  I LOVE this kid’s attitude-he could teach a lot of people a thing or two about perspective.

Stop With the Scratching Already!

September 29, 2009

So, our pug has F.A.D. (Flea Allergy Dermatitis).  If she gets a few fleas, she goes insane scratching.  She also has another undiagnosed skin allergy that gets really stinky and turns her skin dark.  She will scratch and lick herself until she has sores.  It used to only last two months a year (give or take) but this year has been different.  She’s been bad since spring and has numerous constant sores.  Yes we take her to the vet, we get pills that kill fleas instantly, (in addition to her regular monthly Advantage doses)we have medicated shampoos, we have steroid sprays, we’ve changed her diet to a grass-fed beef and veggie diet, we’ve tried organic type dog foods, we’ve tried antihistamines and I used vinegar, oatmeal rinses, plain oatmeal watered down and oatmeal shampoos.(Now I know…VERY BAD for her condition)  So far nothing has really worked.  I no longer use the steroid spray.  I used it very sparingly (still have the bottle from last year) but once I saw that the hand I used to rub it in started getting these itchy, red, sometimes painful bumps on my fingertips and palm I decided to no longer use it.  I also use the antihistamines as little as possible in order to not let the chemical build-up in her system become to great.

Lately no one’s sleeping.  She goes through fits throughout the night first keeping me awake, and now my husband whom sleeps like a log.  I’ve started making a homemade essential oil skin spray that seems to help her hot spots for a while.  (I think she’s at her worst when she gets hot-like laying in one spot for too long) This weekend I found this article and we immediately went out and bought the provadine and found a great Herbal shampoo.  I’m also making up the apple-cider vinegar rinse suggested in the article.

Do you have a dog that’s driving you insane with skin allergies?  (Remember it’s not their fault-keep that frustration in check)  Read the article from Mercola Healthy Pets below and give the natural approach a try.  Come back and tell us how it went.  It’s not a sales pitch to buy anything.  It is honest information for an alternative way in treating your itchy pet.  We’re only on day three, too soon to tell how it’s going, but she’s been resting much more peacefully these past two days.  The nights are better, not as they should be, but better.  [OH, be sure to read through all of the pages of comments, even more information there]

Healthy cats and dogs are not itchy, smelly, flaky or constantly trying to scratch or bite at their fur. If your pet is displaying any of these tell-tale signals, it’s a major sign that something is out of balance in their system.

When all systems in your pet’s body are humming along in balance, their skin, eyes, ears, and digestive system are protected by their immune substances (IgA). In other words, your dog and cat feel good.

In a healthy animal (dog, cat, or human) normal inhabitants of the skin coexist in harmony, each doing their jobs and living their lives in a symbiotic relationship.

If an animal’s immune system is under more stress than it can manage, this symbiotic relationship can fall out of balance and skin problems — hot spots, rashes, yeast overgrowth and bacterial infections — can result.

Conventional medical intervention includes antihistamines, antibiotics, and steroids. All of these medications modify and suppress the immune system, and although sometimes required, your goal should be to help your pet’s immune system work properly, not to suppress it.

With species-appropriate nutrition, appropriate bathing and proper exercise, many animals regain their health and thrive without drugs.

Living; a Poem

September 24, 2009

Last night I found this poem by Denise Levertov: “Living”

The fire in leaf and grass
so green it seems
each summer the last summer.

The wind blowing, the leaves
shivering in the sun,
each day the last day.

A red salamander
so cold and so
easy to catch, dreamily

moves his delicate feet
and long tail. I hold
my hand open for him to go.

Each minute the last minute.

I am really drawn to this one. I find myself constantly drifting, lost in contemplation of nature’s beauty and awe when I’m out on a walk with my husband and or dogs…and even sometimes when I’m in the car. I’m looking at the coloring, the texture, the movement of all that is around me. Taking in the scents that greet my nose and hearing every nuance that alerts my ears. Noticing subtle changes from day to day, week to week, month to month. Needless to say, I’m often way behind the group when walking with my husband and dogs-trying to keep up from time to time.

Once I read this poem it reminded me of these feeling I get on my walks. As the poem teaches, every day is precious because the earth, and we, go through seasons, and every season might be our last; every moment of meeting an earthly creature, every experience we encounter is unique, unrepeatable. As Czelsaw Milosz says the “salamander reminds one of the frailty of our lives.”

Wellness, Pure and Simple is UP!

August 31, 2009

So, today I finished my new site Wellness, Pure and Simple to a point where it is ready to share with the world.  Take a look! I’m very proud and excited about it.  I’m applying for a few affiliate programs this evening for it in hopes it will help bring in a little side cash.  Not “working” makes me nervous about bills even though my husband tells me “no worries”.  So, we’ll see.  If you like it, please share it with others.  Cheers!pc_wellness
